BAG BAN - Shoppers love
it but environmentalists say that
the plastic shopping bag must
go. The government in Nepal
is drafting a bill to ban them.
In India, the states
of Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim have
already banned plastic bags and
fine shopkeepers if any are found
on their premises.
 In
Bangladesh there has been
a chorus of demands for a complete
ban on plastic bags ever since they
contributed to the floods in Dhaka
two years ago by clogging drains.
In many European countries
(i.e. Switzerland) stores
charge extra for plastic carriers.
In the summer of 2003 South
Africa has outlawed the use
of free plastic bags.

In the summer 2007 San Francisco joined the list of the increasing number of places that have outlawed plastic bags.
Jared Blumenfeld, head of the city's environment, says the ban will reduce litter and the cost of clearing it: sending a worker out to pull bags from trees costs up to $150 a time. 'The Economist' March 31, 2007
